Motorists need to "Move It On Over"

The Reidsville Police Department wants to make residents aware of two relatively new state laws that affect motorists.

The “Move Over” Law and “Fender-Bender” Law are designed to help ensure motorist safety by maintaining a smooth flow of traffic. The Move It On Over Public Awareness Campaign was launched to make motorists knowledgeable about the laws.

The “Move Over” Law is just as it says – motorists should move over to the next lane, if possible, or reduce speed for stopped emergency vehicles with their lights flashing on the shoulder of the highway. This law, which became effective on January 1, 2002, carries with it a $25 fine, plus an estimated $100 in court costs, for the convicted offender.

The “Fender Bender” Law, effective since October 1, 2003, states that a motorist should move over to the shoulder of the road as soon as possible if involved in a minor fender-bender where both cars are able to be driven and there are no injuries. Violation of this could result in a $10 fine, plus an estimated $100 in court costs.
